C'est sous la direction de Le Nôtre que fut construit, entre 1679 et 1681, le bassin de Neptune, nommé alors pièce d'eau sous le Dragon, ou pièce des Sapins. Jacques-Ange Gabriel en modifia légèrement le tracé en 1736 et, en 1740, on mit en place le décor sculpté.
Le nouveau bassin, inauguré par Louis XV, suscita l'admiration par le nombre, l'ampleur et la variété des jets d'eau jouant sur les sculptures de plomb.
Il compte 99 jets d'eau qui constituent un extraordinaire ensemble hydraulique.
The Neptune fountain was built under the direction of Le Nôtre between 1679 and 1681, and was then called the "Pool below the Dragon" or the "Fir Tree Pool". Jacques-Ange Gabriel slightly modified the pool area and, in 1740, the sculptural decoration was installed.
The new fountain, officially opened by Louis XV, aroused admiration for the number, the force and the variety of the jets of water playing over the lead sculptures.
