LE PARTERRE DU MIDI, DIT LE PARTERRE DES FLEURS
Autrefois nommé parterre des fleurs ou parterre de l'Amour, il est situé au dessus de l'Orangerie.
On y accède par un perron encadré de deux des plus anciennes sculptures du parc : Les Enfants aux sphinx.
Les enfants de bronze furent modelés par Sarazin, fondus par Duval en 1668 et placés sur des sphinx en marbre, sculptés par Lerambert. Les fleurs et les broderies de buis y forment des dessins savants.
Au XVIIe siècle, pendant le règne de Louis XIV, des fleurs de couleurs vives étaient plantées et renouvelées sans cesse : giroflées, jacynthes, jasmins, tulipes, narcisses, lys, coquelourdes, oeillets de poète et jonquilles.
THE SOUTH PARTERRE, KNOWN AS THE FLOWER PARTERRE
Previously known as the Flower Parterre or Cupid parterre, it is laid out above the Orangerie.
It is reached by a flight of steps flanked by two of the oldest sculptures of the park, depicting Eros and the Sphinx.
The bronze children were modelled by Sarazin, cast by Duval in 1668 and placed on marble sphinxes carved by Lerambert.
The flowers and ornamental trimmed hedges form complicated patterns.
In the 17th century, during the reign of Louis XIV, brightly coloured flowers were planted and replaced constantly here : wallflowers, hyacinths, jasmines, tulips, narcissi, lilies, sweet Williams and daffodils.
